Overview
Mental health nursing is a specialized field of nursing which focuses on working with mentally ill clients to meet their recovery goals. Nurses consider the person's physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs, within the context of the individual's lived experiences in partnership with their family, significant within the broader community.
Mental health nurses support clients and their families during life crises and transition periods, by liaising discretely and efficiently with a range of health care providers. Provide information and education on maintenance and restoration of mental health, coordinate care, and provide therapy required for restoration.
Since mental health nurses play a significant role in the care of mentally as well as physically ill patients, the effort of the department is to work across the full range of clinical and service settings in the health care system also they should possess the qualifications, skills, and experience to provide high-quality mental health nursing care in all contexts across the lifespan.
 
Aim
The aim of the mental health and psychiatric nursing program in nursing is to prepare graduates to assume responsibilities as registered nurse specialists, educators, and administrators in a wide variety of mental health care settings.

Mission
  • Establish the highest standards of   Psychiatric nursing care and rehabilitation at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.
  • Promote research-oriented nursing practice to fortify the science of nursing in improving patient outcomes.
  • Provide consultancy services in areas relevant to the current and future direction of mental health nursing practice, education, and research.
 
General Objectives
Students will acquire in-depth knowledge regarding mental health and psychiatric nursing and to develop skills in the management of the mentally ill in hospitals and communities. 
 
Specific Objectives
On completion of academic &clinical experience, the students will be able to,
  • Develops skill in communicating therapeutically through history taking and performing the mental status examination.
  • Maintain quality in educational programs for students (M.Sc. Psychiatric Nursing, B.Sc Nursing, Diploma in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing   students)
  • Assess the needs and problems of the clients and provide comprehensive nursing care based on the nursing process.
  • Manage the patient with various mental disorders.
  • Provide a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient.
  • Assist in various therapies and investigations conducted in the psychiatry/ De-addiction ward & OPD.
  • Provide quality nursing care to patients and families in the hospital, as well as in the community, through a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Provide advisory and consultation services in the field of nursing service, education, and research.
  • Build up research potential in the Department
  • Maintain prompt and precise records.
  • Motivate patients for early treatment and follow up
