Medical-Surgical Nursing

Overview
The Department of Medical-Surgical Nursing deals with courses related to adult health nursing including geriatrics within the framework of the curriculum developed by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and the Indian Nursing council. The clinical services of the department include clinical supervision of students, patient care, in-service education, conduction of awareness programs, health screening, clinical administration, and research activities.
 
The services are rendered in various areas of SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital that include: general medical & surgical wards, out-patient departments, specialty wards, critical care units, intensive care units, and operating rooms, diagnostic and procedural areas.
 
Aim
The aim of the medical and surgical nursing program is to prepare undergraduates and postgraduates students to assume and perform responsibilities as a registered nurse and specialists, educators, and administrators in a wide variety of medical, surgical, and critical care settings.
 
Vision
To be at the foremost in the area of medical, surgical and critical care setting, guided by a philosophy and commitment to promote health, alleviate suffering and prevent illness through the state of the art approaches to patient care, high-quality medical and surgical nursing education and nursing research.
 
Mission
  • Establish the highest standards of medical surgical nursing care and rehabilitation at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.
  • Promote research-oriented nursing practice to fortify the science of nursing in improving patient outcomes.
  • Provide consultancy services in areas relevant to the current and future direction of medical surgical nursing practice, education, and research.
 
General Objectives
Students will acquire in-depth knowledge regarding medical surgical nursing and to develop skills in the management of medically and surgically ill patients in the hospital.
 
Specific Objectives
On completion of academic &clinical experience, the students will be able to,
  • Develops skill in communicating therapeutically through history taking and performing a physical examination.
  • Maintain quality in educational programs for students (M.Sc. Medical-Surgical Nursing, B.Sc. Nursing, Diploma in Nursing students)
  • Assess the needs and problems of the clients and provide comprehensive nursing care based on the nursing process.
  • Manage the patient with various medical and surgical diseases.
  • Provide a safe and therapeutic environment for the patient.
  • Assist in various therapies and diagnostic investigations conducted in the medical, surgical, and critical care units.
  • Provide quality nursing care to patients and families in the hospital, through a multidisciplinary and holistic approach.
  • Provide advisory and consultation services in the field of nursing service, education, and research.
  • Build up research potential in the Department
  • Maintain prompt and precise records.
  • Motivate patients for early treatment and follow up
