Hematology 

About the Department
Department of Hematology is involved with diagnosis and management of patients with blood related disorders. It also includes management of management of patients with blood cancers. Department is also involved in teaching and training of doctors, specialist nurses and laboratory technicians. In collaboration of SDM Biomedical Research Center, department is involved in various research activities.
 
About the Staff
Dr. Girish Balikai, MD (Gen Med), MRCP, FRCP, CCT (UK), heads the Department of Hematology. After completion of MD, he worked in UK for 11 years from 2003 to 2014 in various capacities. He has specialist training in hemato-oncology and bone marrow transplantation. Prior to moving to India, he was working as senior consultant in Southend University Hospital, UK.
 
Dr. Girish Kamat, MD (Path), PGDFM (CMC, Vellore), DNB (Hematology), Fellowship in Hematology & BMT (AIMS, Kochi), is working as Assistant Professor in Department of Hematology. He underwent specialty training in hematology and bone marrow transplantation at Sahyadri Specialty Hospital, Pune. Subsequently he joined Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi, as Fellow in Hematology and BMT in department of Medical Oncology.
 
Dr. Deepak Goni, MD (Gen Med), DM (Clinical Haematology), is working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Haematology. After completion of MD, he worked as senior resident in the department of clinical haematology Safdarjung hospital New Delhi for two years from 2014 to 2016. Then he underwent 3 years of DM training programme in clinical haematology at PGIMER, Chandigarh from 2017 to 2019. During this tenure he worked for 6 months in the bone marrow transplant unit. His areas of interest are myeloproliferative neoplasms, coagulation disorders, multiple myeloma, autologous stem cell transplant in myeloma and lymphomas.
 
Patient Care
  • OPD Services: Department runs OPDs every day from 09.00am to 05.00pm. OPDs are located on 1st floor of Manjushri Block (Specialty Hospital).
  • IPD Services: Department has a 18 bedded, exclusive, hematology general ward, which is located on 6th floor of Manjushri Block (Specialty Hospital). All chemotherapies are administered in this ward.
  • Day Care Services: Hematology patients who need low intensity chemotherapies and transfusion support, are generally managed in day care.
  • Referral Services: Department caters to various other departments in medical college, when patients need expert hematological opinion.
  • Patient care meet is conducted every day, where care-plans for patients are discussed. As far as possible, patients are treated as per established guidelines.
 
Treatment Facilities
Medical Management
Department has facilities and expertise to manage following conditions:
  • Anemia: Nutritional anemia, hemolytic anemia, thalassemia, and aplastic anemia.
  • Leukemia: Chronic myeloid leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myeloid leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
  • Lymphoma: Hodgkin’s lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Other malignancies: Polycythemia vera, essential thrombocytosis, myelofibrosis, and myelodysplastic syndrome.
  • Platelet disorders: Immune thrombocytopenic purpura, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, and qualitative platelet disorders.
  • Coagulation disorders: Deep vein thrombosis, antiphospholipid antibody syndrome, hemophilia and von Willebrand disease.
Procedures
Following procedures are done in the department on routine basis:
  • Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
  • Lumbar puncture and intrathecal chemotherapy
  • PICC Line insertion
Diagnostic Facilities
  • Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
  • Coagulation work up
  • Hemolytic anemia work up (In collaboration with biochemistry department)
  • Molecular tests (In collaboration with SDM Biomedical Research Center)
  • Other necessary tests such as cytogenetics and FISH are being outsourced at present.
 
Teaching
Department is involved in regular teaching program for post-graduates in General Medicine, Paediatrics and Pathology. Regular training sessions are conducted for nursing staff and junior doctors in the department.
 
Workshops and CMEs
  • CME on “Hematology and Safe blood transfusion practices” was conducted on 08/01/2014 at DRH auditorium, in collaboration with Department of General Medicine.
