Overview:
Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University, Dharwad, has been established under the SHRI DHARMASTHALA MANJUNATHESHWARA UNIVERSITY ACT 2OI8 (Karnataka Act No. 19 of 2018), and has come into effect from 19th December 2018 as a State Private University of the State of Karnataka, of unitary nature, at Sattur, Dharwad.
 
SDM Research Institute for Biomedical Sciences (SDMRIBS) is a constituent unit of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University, a young university established one year ago. The institute established specialized research facilities such as pharmaceutical grade clean room (~2000 sq. ft) for validation and production of clinical-grade cells and cell-based products for therapeutic applications and well equipped basic research laboratories to unravel the mysteries of various unmet medical needs particularly, non-communicable diseases through innovative thinking, creative problem solving and cutting edge technologies. The institute is intending to conduct research in the advanced and emerging areas of modern science with innovation and initiative for indigenous technology & product development for the betterment of humankind.

The institute offers academic programs, M. Sc. in Biomedical Science on the basis of the Choice Based Credit System and Ph.D. program in Biological Sciences as per the UGC guidelines. In light of the national importance of skill-based education and the recent year’s major emphasis of research on biomedical areas the university has instituted the Master of Science degree program in Biomedical Science from the academic year 2020-21 at SDMRIBS to inculcate the culture of passion and commitments among students/staff/researchers’ by igniting their minds for innovation through quality concepts, skill development and intellectual property development.
 
Introduction to M. Sc. (Biomedical Science) Program:
 
Biomedical science is in an amalgamation of biological sciences and medical sciences. The focus of this program is to gain advanced knowledge and skills in the field of Biomedical Sciences, which would create a strong base for research & development for innovative ideas & translation of inventions to clinical medicine for the betterment of human health. Advanced biomedical research is a rapidly-changing, dynamic and complex science that continuously demands accuracy, efficiency, and attention to minute details. The program is a first-of-its-kind in this region of Karnataka. It is a great opportunity for students who are interested in basic, advanced, and translational research and aspire to careers in academia, biomedical research in research centers/Institutes/University or to work in the biotechnical, pharmaceutical and health care industry in Indian and abroad.
 
Objectives of the Program:
The two years Master of Science in Biomedical Science program provide students with an intellectually motivating education to acquire a systematic understanding of integrated specialties of biological and medical sciences.  Our M. Sc. in Biomedical Science program will give students a strong foundation in a range of medically related subjects, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry immunology, nanotechnology, cell technologies, and OMICS technologies as well as other specialized subjects like statistics, bioethics, IPR, regulations.
 
Scope of the Program:
It always gives the personal satisfaction of using our scientific and detective skills to investigate disease to help scientists, physicians, and clinicians to alleviate the sufferings and/or save the life of patients. This program helps in diversifying of an interesting and rewarding career with a range of opportunities for personal and career development.
  • The students will acquire hands-on experience in laboratory techniques—Skill development.
  • Develop communication skills through group discussions, journal clubs, and seminar presentations.
  • Education in the preparation of audio-visual aids for teaching, posters/manuscripts preparation and presentation in conferences/workshops, as well as journal publications.
  • Allow them to shape their subsequent advanced studies, Ph.D. and Post-doctoral research towards the topics that interest them the most in the areas of Biological and Medical Sciences.
  • Seeking for jobs in Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Industries, Healthcare industry, and Research Centres/Institutes/University.

Structure of the Program:
Duration: Program shall be 2 academic years with semester pattern having a total of 4 Semesters.
 
Program Syllabus: The syllabus of M. Sc. in the Biomedical Science program has been prepared as per the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) pattern. The syllabus has been prepared to take into consideration of the UGC guidelines, syllabus of SLET/NET examination, and other universities as well as the specific inputs of the Expert Committee Members.
 
The Medium of Instruction and Examination: Medium of Instruction and Examination shall be in English
 
Eligibility for Admission: A candidate seeking for admission to M. Sc. (Biomedical Science) program must have passed a bachelor's degree of minimum 3 years duration in biological sciences (Biomedical Science/Biotechnology/Molecular Biology/Biochemistry/Microbiology/Botany/Zoology/Genetics/Home Science/Chemistry with Biological subjects) or passed bachelor degree in BE/B-Tech majoring in biotechnology/Medical/Dental/B. Pharm/B. Sc., Nursing (3 or 4 years) /Pharmacology/Animal Sciences and any other bachelor's degree in Life Science from reputed and recognized University/Board recognized as equivalent by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University, with not less than 50% marks in aggregate.  Candidates who are currently appearing for the qualifying exam are also eligible to apply for M. Sc. (Biomedical Science). In such a case, they have to clear it before the finalization of the admission process.
 
Mode of Selection of Eligible Candidates: Selection to the M. Sc. in Biomedical Science program shall be based on the eligibility, marks secured in the qualifying examination and personal interview to be conducted by Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University.

“Basic and Advanced Cell Culture Techniques”
 
SDMRIBS offers an interactive hands-on training program in “Cell Culture and Analysis Techniques to expose participants to a broad range of essential skills required for cell culture and maintenance. This training program is a platform to enhance your understanding of cell culture and analysis techniques as well as principles and operation of biomedical research laboratory equipment with our interactive hands-on and classroom training. The main goal of this program is to provide hands-on training to build confidence in independently handling cell culture laboratories in academic institutions and industry. This program offers laboratory-based tuition using a range of human and animal cell lines, commonly used in biomedical research and the biopharmaceutical industry.

In 3 weeks training program, participants will have the opportunity to work in Class II A2 Biosafety Cabinets and put the skills into practice by establishing primary cell culture from healthy or diseased tissues (individually, for 2 weeks). This helps participants to fully understand the complexities of working with mammalian cells and cell culture facilities.
