NMC Approved Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME)

The NMC Approved Basic Course in Medical Education (BCME) unfolded at SDM College of Medical Sciences & Hospital from 29.01.24 to 31.01.24.

Venue: PG Seminar Hall 4 (MEU Hall), SDM College of Medical Sciences & Hospital, Dharwad

Participants: 30 passionate teaching staff from para, clinical, and superspeciality subjects at SDM College of Medical Sciences & Hospital, Dharwad.

Format of the Workshop: Three immersive days featuring sessions on Group dynamics, learning domains, adult learning, CBME roles and goals, Objective writing workshop, TL Methods, Assessment techniques, AETCOM, SDL, framing LAQ, SAQ, MCQs, lesson plans, and training in clinical skills assessment. Engaging group activities and valuable feedback enhanced the learning experience! 


Induction Program MBBS Batch 2023-24

The MBBS Batch 2023-24 consisting 150 Students were inducted to the SDM Medical College on 7th October, 2023 at DVH Kalakshetra. Poojya Shri D. Veerendra Heggade, Hon'ble Chancellor, Smt. Hemavathi V Heggade, Chairperson of SIRI Gramodyoga, Ujire and Dr. Ramesh S Mudhol, Vice Chancellor of BLDE University, Bijapur and Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Vice Chancellor inaugurated the induction program by lighting the lamp. University Officials, Heads of the Institutions, Faculty and Students were present during the program.

Poojya Shri D. Veerendra Heggade, Hon'ble Chancellor blessed the Students and told that:

Utsav Cultural Fest-2023

The Annual Cultural Fest of SDM Medical College "Utsav-2023" was held from 3-8 August, 2023.  A formal function and Fashion show was held on 7th August 2023.  Utsav - 2023 Cultural program was proudly presented by the Medical Students Batch of 2020.  Dr.  Niranjan Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Dr. Aniketh V. Belagadde, the Alumnus of SDM Medical College and an eminent Interventional Cardiologist, Chikkamangalore and another alumnus Dr. (Mrs.) Ashwini Bidri Aniketh were the Chief Guests.   
The Chief Guest, Dr.  Aniketh told that:
•    He got full of Confidence, hope, hardworking nature for his success from SDM Medical College
•    Along with studies, must involve Utsav kind of things which makes them de-stress, rejuvenate and relaxation
•    Dr. Aniketh is grateful for the SDM Management and all faculties for moulding them

SDM Doctor Aarogya Samvada reaching its 900th episode

SDM Doctor Aarogya Samvada completes continues 900th Episodes on 18th July, 2023. When SDM Medical College and Hospital was started in 2003, as an extension of providing Healthcare suggestions and guidance to the public, in April 2006 SDM Medical College has started SDM Doctor Aarogya Samvada through All India Radio, Dharwad. SDM Aarogya Samvada Phone-in program is the only program in the history of All India Radio Dharwad which is running successfully 18 years without breaking a single week (every Tuesdays).
All India Radio and SDM University has jointly organized a function to celebrate the occasion. Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Smt. Padmalatha Niranjan, Executive Director, Dr. Basu Bevinagidad, Head of Programs -All India Radio were the Guests. 
Vice Chancellor, Dr. Niranjan Kumar complemented the efforts of All India Radio for the success of SDM Aarogya Samvada Program. 
•    The success of SDM Aarogya Samvada is because it started with a good intension
•    Prevention of disease is always better than struggling when we are ill

SDM Medical College observes World Plastic Surgery Day

World Plastic Surgery Day was observed by the Department of Plastic Surgery, SDM Medical College on 15th July 2023.  Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Vice Chancellor and the Eminent Plastic Surgeon, Smt. Padmalatha Niranjan, the Executive Director and others inaugurated the Plastic Surgery Day by lighting the Lamp.  

Dr Anil R. Professor of Plastic Surgery gave an awareness expert talk to all the Doctors, Para Medical Support Staff, and Nursing Staff on “What all Plastic Surgeons Can do” for Patients in the area of Plastic Surgery.  There were about 150 Doctors, Para Medical and Support Staff and the general public attended the program for the awareness

Awareness programme on the occasion of ‘International Day against Illicit Drugs and Trafficking’

The Department of Psychiatry, SDM College of Medical Sciences & Hospital and College of Nursing jointly organized a community awareness programme on 28th June ,2023, at Pudakalakatti village, Dharwad Rural, on the occasion of ‘International Day against Illicit Drugs and Trafficking’. Dr. Sachin B S, Associate Professor Psychiatry, and Mr Vishwesh K, Psychiatric Social Worker delivered awareness talk on prevention of substance use. The nursing students performed street play depicting causes, impact and treatment for substance use. The President, Secretary, members Pudakalakatti Panchayath had graces the occasion and more than 60 villagers participated in the programme.


Lecture on the occasion of International Day against Illicit Drugs and Trafficking at Government First Grade College, Haliyal

The Department of Psychiatry, SDM College of Medical Sciences & Hospital in association with Sri Vivekanada Youth Movement Dharwad, and Government First Grade College, Haliyal organized a special lecture on the occasion of International Day against Illicit Drugs and Trafficking at Government First Grade College, Haliyal on June 30, 2023. Dr Vinuta C, Senior Resident Psychiatry and Mr Vishwesh K, Psychiatric Social Worker delivered special lecture on the topic. Principal, members of faculty, staff, and students had participated in the event.


International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking

Department of Mental Health Nursing, NSS Unit of SDM Nursing College in association with Department of Psychiatry, SDM Medical College jointly organized “International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking” on 26th June, 2023 on the Theme of “People first: Stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention”. 
Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Dr. Abhay Matkar, Head - Dept. of Psychiatry, Dr. David Kola, Principal, SDM Nursing College inaugurated the program. 
Dr. Balaram Naik, Principal, SDM Dental College, Shri V G Prabhu, Finance Officer, Dr. Makhdoom Killedar, Dy. Medical Superintendent, Faculty, Students of Nursing & Psychiatry department were present. 
Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Vice Chancellor told that:
•    We should go to society to educate the people on “prevention is better than cure” 
•    We should educate the Students of Schools and Colleges about the effects of Drug abuse
•    People should understand that health is more important than anything else
•    The effects of drug abusing causes different types of health issues

Dr. Abhay Matkar told that:
•    25% people has the effects of substance abuse
•    The nicotine in tobacco causes Oral Cancer
•    Todays’ youngsters must follow the good habits of Playing, Reading, Yoga and Meditation etc., than getting into the drug abuses. 
•    People involved in Drug Abuse will lose their study, career, economy and social status. 

The Nursing College Students presented the Posters to Vice Chancellor and other dignitaries on the effect of Smoking, Chewing Tobacco, Using Drugs and Alcohol Consumption. A Skit was played by the students of Nursing College on the theme for the awareness.

CME on Gut Brain Axis - Are They Really in Talking Terms?

The Department of Physiology, SDM Medical College has conducted One Day CME on 24th June, 2023 on the theme “Gut Brain Axis – Are They Really in Talking Terms”. About 180 participants across Karnataka State have participated in the CME.
The CME was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Vice Chancellor of SDM University, Smt. Padmalatha Niranjan, Executive Director, Dr. S. K.  Joshi, Pro Vice Chancellor (Academics), Dr. Chidendra M. Shettar, Registrar, SDM University, Dr. Rathnamala M. Desai, Principal SDM Medical College.
The Chief Guest Dr. Niranjan Kumar addressed the gathering and told that:
•    Good education is the most powerful weapon.
•    SDM University will soon become a hub of Academic Excellence. 
•    Eating good balanced food is necessary to keep both gut & mind healthy.
•    Sharing our knowledge leads to multiplied by many beneficiaries.

Voluntary Blood Donation Camp

The Blood Bank SDM Medical College organized Voluntary Blood Donation Camp in association with Free Masons Lodge, Dharwad on the occasion of Universal Brotherhood Day. Free Masons Lodge Dharwad is now more than 125 years old.  The objective Free Masons is Fatherhood of God and Brotherhood of man. Various charity programs are carried out help the deserving society. 
The basic tents of Free Masonary are Brotherly Love, Faith, hope and Charity. The camp was inaugurated by lighting the lamp by Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Vice Chancellor, SDM University, Smt. Padmalatha Niranjan, Executive Director, Shri Ramanath K. Hegde the Master of Dharwad Lodge, Lt. Col. U S Dinesh, Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Pathology and others. Dr. S K Joshi, Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr. Kiran Hegde, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Vidhisha Athnaikar, HOD were present.

After the inauguration Vice Chancellor told that:
•    The Brotherhood and Fatherhood concepts of Free Masonry are good tools to serve the society. 
•    It is a good spirit to donate blood on the Brotherhood Day
•    Blood donation is a ultimate Dhana.
•    Everyone must inculcate and enjoy the spirit of giving which is excess with us

SDM Medical College celebrated the World Blood Donors Day

Department of Blood Bank (Pathology Dept.), SDM Medical College celebrated the World Blood Donors Day on 14th June, 2023 with a theme of “Give Blood, Give Plasma, Share Life, Share Often” World Blood Donors Day is being celebrated since 2004 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, the Father of Transfusion Medicine. 

Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Vice Chancellor and Dr. Vijaylakshmi, Prof.  & Head of Emergency Medicine were the Chief Guests. Dr. Vijaylakshmi told that:

  • Blood Donation is a noble donation which saves many lives. 
  • The youngsters come forward to donate the Blood. 
  • All of us have to make it a habit of donating blood on our birthdays 
  • SDM Blood Bank has saved thousands of life by giving the blood on time. 

Dr. Niranjan Kumar and Smt. Padmalatha Niranjan Kumar along with other dignitaries felicitated 10 frequent voluntary blood donors. 

Mr. Suchith Angadi, the person who donated 65 times blood responded on behalf of the voluntary blood donors and told that:

  • By donating the blood one’s health condition will be known
  • We should always have the intension of helping others
  • Our blood donation will be most helpful for a outside patient who doesn’t know anybody here. 
  • SDM Hospital is giving a noble healthcare service to the people of North Karnataka 
  • Our blood donors team will always be ready for the noble cause

17th Annual Psychiatry CME with the Theme - “Psychiatric Rehabilitation”.

The Department of Psychiatry, SDM Medical College has organized its 17th Annual Psychiatry CME (Continued Medical Education) on 11th June 2023 with the Theme – “Psychiatric Rehabilitation”.

The Chief Guest & Pro Vice Chancellor (Academics), Dr. SK Joshi with other dignitaries inaugurated the CME by lighting of the Lamp and told that

  • The Radio diagnosis Dept. contributes in a big way to diagnose the Psychiatric patients properly.
  • The Nature plays a vital role in curing the Psychiatric Patients & one should enjoy the nature
  • Today people volunteers to consult Psychiatrists when they get disturbed
  • Doctors should diagnose patients properly and understand the purpose of the treatment  

The Guest of Honor, Vice Principal & Professor of Pathology of SDM Medical College, Dr. Deepak R. Kanabur told in his speech that:

  • Regular CMEs updates the latest knowledge not only doctors, but also students

AMBKCCON SDMCMS&H - 2023

Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University, Sattur, Dharwad.

The Department of Biochemistry, SDM Medical College has conducted Two-days State Conference of “AMBKCCON - 2023” (Association of Medical Biochemists Karnataka Chapter Conference).

The Conference was inaugurated by Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Smt. Padmalatha Niranjan, Executive Director, Dr. Prashanth Vishwanath, National President of Association of Medical Biochemists of India (AMBI). The other Dignitaries presented were Dr. Meera S, State President of AMBKCCON, Dr. S K Joshi, Pro Vice Chancellor, Dr. Chidendra M Shettar, Registrar, Dr. Rathnamala M Desai, Principal SDM Medical College.

Dr. Meera S complimented the Organizing Team for hosting this Conference in SDM University in a professional manner. She told that – This type of Conferences enhances and upgrades the latest technology prevailing in the Biochemistry field within the Faculty, Researchers and Postgraduate Students.

Dr. S K Joshi told that – Biochemists are having challenging and important role in analyzing the Biochemical Reports which results in proper diagnosing and treatment.

About 250 Biochemistry Teachers, Researchers and Post Graduates from across the State of Karnataka have participated in the Conference.

Department of Pathology, celebrated National Pathology Day on 13.4.2023  Birth Anniversary of Dr V. Khanolkar, Father of Pathology and modern medicine and Padmabhushan recipient. Chief Guest for program was Dr Jagadish Kanabargi senior consultant pathologist from Dharwad. The program was carried out by conducting quiz for Medical Undergraduates and Dental students, screening round on 11.4.23 and final round on 13.4.23. the student’s participation was overwhelming.

Quiz competition was conducted, for Medical Undergraduates and Dental students of second year pathology, a screening round was conducted a week before and 12 teams participated.

The final round was done on the 13th in the presence of Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Chancellor of SDM University. We received a good response from the students and the students participated in the quiz. The program was attended by the higher officials of the university, the head of the SDM institution, the teaching staff and the students.  Head of the department, Dr. Vidisha Athanikar, appreciated the efforts of the faculties and then chief guest distributed the prizes to the students who participated and won the first, second and third positions.

2nd prize : Team mucicarmine (Asha and Anita)
3rd prize : Team Reticulin (Ashrita and Chandan)


One Day CME on “Potpourri in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus”

Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University, Sattur, Dharwad

The Department of Ophthalmology, SDM Medical College has conducted One Day CME on “POTPOURRI IN PEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGY AND STRABISMUS” on 26th March, 2023. This CME emphasized the importance of early detection and timely management of Eye problems in Children. 

About 200 Delegates comprising Practicing Ophthalmologists and Postgraduates from all over Karnataka and South India attended the CME. The CME was jointly organized by Dept. of Ophthalmology, SDM College of Medical Sciences & Hospital, Hubli-Dharwad Ophthalmic Association and Karnataka Ophthalmic Society. Eminent & Reputed Ophthalmologists from Karnataka and outside States delivered expert talk on the subject.  

The CME was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Dr. Shashi Patil, District Health Officer, Dharwad, Dr. Niranjan Kumar, Vice Chancellor of SDM University, Smt. Padmalatha Niranjan, Executive Director, Dr. Deepak Kanabur, Vice Principal, SDM Medical College,  Dr. Anupama S Desai, Organizing Secretary and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology.  

The Chief Guest Dr. Shashi Patil addressed the gathering and told that:

  • With the Advanced Technologies eye problems in children can be detected early  and  managed efficiently
  • This CME is a step towards child eye care and service to the community.

Dr. Anupama S Desai welcomed the dignitaries. Dr. Shankargouda Patil, the Organizing Committee Chairman and President of Hubli-Dharwad Ophthalmic Association introduced the Chief Guest. Dr. Mridula Prabhu, Professor proposed the vote of thanks.


“GYN 3D ENDO Laparoscopy”

Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University, Sattur, Dharwad

SDM College of Medical Sciences & Hospital a Constituent Unit of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Univesity conducted one day Workshop on “GYN 3D ENDO Laparoscopy” with 3D Relay, the first of its kind in our Region held on 6th Nov. 2022 at SDM Medical College Campus.

The advantage and importance of the Workshop:

The operating time as well as the complications will be less compared to the existing 2D Laparoscopy as it is more precise.

About 250 delegates were participated and received an excellent review.
