Pathology

About the Department

Department of Pathology is involved in training, diagnostic and research activities. It caters to the diagnostic needs of SDM hospital and other private hospitals of Hubli and Dharwad. Staff of department are involved in various research activities in the in the fields of their interest and have brought out publications in the form of books and articles in the national and international journals. Department has conducted several CMEs and workshops. It has proud privilege of conducting Annual Conference of Indian Academy of Cytologist – Cytocon in November 2011. Department co-ordinates tumour board meeting of SDM hospital, where interesting and difficult cancer related cases are discussed. Department handles the blood bank which has facilities for component preparation.

 

Head of Department Prof Col U. S Dinesh, MD, MIAC, heads the department of pathology, MBBS from Stanley Medical College, Madras University 1977 and MD Pathology Armed Forces Medical College, Pune 1984. Has served in the Armed Forces Medical Services for 27 years at various establishments including an United Nations assignment at Somalia. Following premature retirement joined SDM on its inception. He is the Secretary of the Indian Academy of Cytologists and has numerous publications in national and international journals. He has presented papers at the European Cytology Congress at Turkey and at the International Cytology Congress at Paris. He has been resource person at various National and International Conferences and has successfully organised the National Cytology conference at Dharwad and instrumental in the launch of the State Chapter of the India Academy of Cytologists. Has been awarded the Earnest Fernades Award for the Slide Seminar by the Indian Academy of Cytologists at CYTOCN 2012, the 42nd National Conferences of the Indian Academy of Cytologists at Bhuvansehwar He is an examiner for MBBS, MD and DCP examinations of various universities. He is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal ACTA CYTOLOGICA and the Indian Journal of Cytology.  He is a peer reviewer for these two journals as well as the Journal of the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists. Has been a Guest faculty at various fora.  His field of interest are cytology especially Fine needle Aspiration Cytology. He is the Secretary of the Tumor board of the Institute.

 

Diagnostic facilities

Pathology department is well equipped to carry out various hematology, clinical pathology, cytopathology, histopathology investigations and also perinatal autopsies. Hematology section has 5 part and 3 part differential automated blood analyzers and coagulometers. Clinical pathology wing which is located in sample collection centre performs routine urine analysis and semen analysis. Both direct and CT/USG guided FNACs are performed in cytopathology section. Pap smear reporting and fluid cytology are also done in this section using cytocentrifuge and thin-prep equipments. Histopathology section is equipped with fully automated tissue processor and state of art cutting and staining equipments. Frozen sections for rapid histopathology diagnosis are regularly done here. It also has facilities to perform special stains and immunohistochemistry.

 

Teaching Program

Teaching for MBBS, MD, DCP, Nursing,  Physiotherapy, DMLT and other paramedical courses is carried out in the department. Department is well equipped with class rooms with audio-visual aids, demo rooms, and practical halls for effective teaching of medical students. An excellent museum containing 670 specimens is a prized possession of this department. Regular topic seminars, journal clubs, gross specimen discussions, autopsy reviews, slide seminars are conducted in the department as a part of PG training program. In addition postgraduates are posted to various diagnostic divisions of the department.

 

Workshops and CMEs
  1. Department conducted a CME on January 17th, 2015 “SDM PATH CME” at IshaVasyam, Superspeciality block, SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Dharwad. Organizing Secretary: Dr. Vandana U Grampurohit, Prof, SDMCMSH and Organizing Chairman: Dr. Col.  U. S. Dinesh, Prof and Head, SDMCMSH, Dharwad.
  2. On 20th of December 2009 Department of Pathology organized a workshop on Hematology. The speakers included Dr. Chetan Manohar and Dr. Ramesh Bhaskaran.
  3. On 10th of November, 2011 CME on “Demystifying gray zones in FNAC: A systematic approach” was conducted. It was moderated by Dr. Shubhada Kane of Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.
  4. Department organized Cytocon- 2011, 41st annual conference of Indian academy of cytologists on 11thand 12th of November 2011.
  5. Workshops on “Cell block in diagnostic cytology” and “Cervical cytology” were conducted on 13th of November 2011.
