Neurosurgery

About the Department

The department of Neurosurgery has made a beginning in collaboration with department of General Surgery from the time of inception of the hospital.  It has been provided with a daily running O.P.D. exclusive operation theater (armed with competent anesthesiologist, state of the art Boyle’s apparatus, image intensifier, operating microscope, micro neuro surgical instruments and well trained neuro surgical staffs.), Surgical Intensive Care Unit (looked after round the clock by well trained nursing staffs under the supervision of anesthesiologists) and inpatient wards (catering to all the strata of the society).  Accident and Emergency Care Unit (Casualty) is handling all the Neurosurgical Emergencies backed by round the clock C.T. and M.R.I Scan facilities from the department of radiology. Department of neurosurgery is willing to expand and want to explore in epilepsy surgeries, endovascular surgeries, functional stereotactic surgeries, minimally invasive brain and spine surgeries and endoscopic surgeries.

Patient Care

Department of Neurosurgery runs daily outpatient services between 8.30am to 5.00pm and emergency services round the clock. It is backed by round the clock services of laboratory, radiology, accidents and emergencies and anesthesiologist. Because of early availability of investigation reports and the availability of PACS- picture archiving and communication system, definitive plan of treatment is often decided on the day of admission itself. Inter departmental references are done on the same day if necessary. Department of Physiotherapy and Re-Habilitation is taking care of outpatients and admitted patients.

Treatment Facilities

Department of neurosurgery is well equipped to treat all varieties of problems related to the brain and spine. Complex Cranio- Facial Injuries are attended in collaboration with the department of Plastic Surgery and Cranio Facial Unit of S.D.M College of Dental Sciences. Regularly treated brain tumors include gliomas, meningiomas, cerebello-pontine angle tumors (Acoustic Schwannomas), ependymomas, medulloblastomas and abscess at all locations of the   brain.  Regularly treated spinal cord tumors include intradural neurofibromas, meningiomas and intra medullary astrocytomas.  The vascular surgeries did include clipping of the cerebral aneurysms and excision of Arterio- Venous malformations. Functional neurosurgeries like micro vascular de-compression of the trigeminal nerve are being done on regular basis.  Pediatric brain tumors, hydrocephalus, encephalocele and spinal myelo-meningoceles repairs are done on regular basis. Spine surgeries being done include C1-C2 fixations (Atlanto-Axial Sub luxations) , fixation of the Odontoid fracture and fracture dislocations of cervical and thoraco- lumbarspine, Combined anterior and posterior stabilization are done on a routine basis. Micro lumbar discectomies and transforaminal lumbar inter vertebral body fusions (TLIF) anterior and posterior stabilization of the cervical spine with state of art instrumentations are done on regular basis at affordable price. Endoscopic, Endonasal Skull base Surgeries are performed in collaboration with the Department of E.N.T.

Teaching Program

Regular teaching classes are being held for under graduate students to introduce them to the science of neurosurgery. Clinical case discussions are conducted with collaboration of Department of General Medicine, General Surgery and Orthopedics to explore the various signs and symptoms pertaining to the central and peripheral nervous system. Post graduates from the department of General Surgery and Orthopedics and Cranio Facial Surgery are being posted regularly and they are exposed to the operative world of neurosurgery. Interdepartmental discussions are being held with department of Opthalmology, E.N.T. Plastic Surgery and Radiology as and when necessary. Important surgeries are recorded and edited to teach the aspiring neurosurgeons.

Workshops and CMEs

State level conference of neurosurgeons and neurologists along with specialties associated with neurological sciences was held in March-2010 at Sri Veerendra Heggade Kalakshetra .  This was well attended by eminent neurologists and neurosurgeons from all over India as a guest faculty.  This conference has become the launching platform for the formation of Karnataka State Neurological Society.
