Shri D. Veerendra Heggade Kalakshetra
Shri D. Veerendra Heggade Kalakshetra was started in 2009 to support the academic activities of SDM Medical College. It is a magnificent auditorium, inspired by the terracotta architecture of Bishnupur temples of West Bengal. It was the desire of Rev President to offer to the society a unique building with extra-ordinary architectural features. He has personally with great interest and enthusiasm participated in the planning process, guiding the project team in every step of construction. The result is the grand building – aptly named as Shri D Veerendra Heggade Kalakhsetra.
The pyramid shaped roof of the auditorium has been fabricated using shingles – a synthetic roofing material, imported from the USA, not only to reduce the structural load but also to enhance the beauty of the structure. The feeling of serenity and peace as one enters into the auditorium may probably be attributed to the energy harnessed by the pyramid roof.
The imposing entrance lobby of the auditorium silently beckons people to revel in its unique ambience sprinkled with medley of earthly colors all around, Nataraja in cosmic dance showering blessings on one and all, imposing tall dome embellished with gleaming chandeliers, differently designed inaugural plaques depicting the art and culture of India, and a beautiful life tree. Embedded and harmoniously merged with the floor are machine cut aesthetic murals made out of colored tiny ceramic tiles.
While the awe inspiring exteriors of the auditorium give a feeling of ancient tradition, the interiors conform to the requirement of a modern auditorium. The auditorium has a built-up area of 35,000 square feet and a capacity to accommodate and seat an audience of 1100 persons. The auditorium boasts of central air-conditioning facility to ensure comfort of the users. The area of stage in the auditorium stands at 2800 square feet providing ample space for conducting functions. Six rehearsal rooms / green rooms with attached toilets and bath facilities are provided for the convenience of the performers. Separate rooms with exclusive entrances for receiving VIPs have also been provided. A well planned dining hall capable of accommodating 300 persons is available with an adjoining kitchen.
The infrastructure of the auditorium has been ideally planned to enable organizing and conducting scientific workshops, seminars & symposiums, cultural programs, alumni gathering, religious-spiritual functions, meetings of international clubs etc. The building is equipped with well designed acoustics and audio-visual systems to cater to the above requirement.
Situated adjacent to the auditorium is a well designed functioning hotel with 78 rooms of different categories. The hotel also has well furnished and equipped board rooms, seminar rooms, party halls, restaurant and fast food facilities. The hotel facilities can be utilized for accommodation and catering purposes during conferences and other functions.
